A developing brain tumor may be asymptomatic for a long time. Sometimes it is diagnosed by accident, and an unexpected event or an unbelievable coincidence comes to the rescue. As in the case of a Danish football fan who was helped by a ball hit in the head to detect a tumor. And the Polish striker was shooting.
- Kamil Wilczek is currently playing in Denmark, he has appeared in the Polish national team three times
- In the Polish and Danish league he proved to be an effective striker, but – as he admits – the most important blow in his career was … an missed shot
- “Perhaps with this shot I saved someone’s life” – said the footballer

Kamil Wilczek is a 33-year-old Polish footballer, he plays as a striker. In the 2014/2015 season, he became the best scorer in the league. Half a year later he became a player of the Broendby IF club from Copenhagen. There he made himself known as a great striker and gained the sympathy of the fans. However, after four years, for many fans he turned out to be a traitor, “Judas” and – as they also came to call him – a “salary”.
Why? Because he started playing for another Danish club, also from Copenhagen (FC København). And as you know, clubs from the same city – it happens all over the world – rarely like each other, fans honestly hate each other, and the transition of a footballer to a local rival is the worst crime in the fan world.
However, there is at least one Broendby fan for whom Wilczek will remain an idol for the rest of his life. Not for scoring goals for the club, but for saving his life.
The footballer’s missed shot allowed the detection of a brain tumor
In August 2016, during a warm-up before the game against … FC Copenhagen, Wilczek missed the goal. The ball flew on and hit the head of a fan behind the goal. David Nielsen lost consciousness as a result of the impact and was taken to hospital. There, during the research, a brain tumor was detected in him.

– Information about this reached me at the national team camp. I kept the whole thing a secret for over a month. I was very involved in it, it caused me a lot of stress. I tried to meet David, but he was in the hospital – said Wilczek a few months later in an interview with Polsatsport.pl
David Nielsen sent a message to Broendby fans some time after this event, in which he told his story and thanked the doctors, fans and the Polish footballer for saving his life.
“Hi everyone.
My name is David and I am the person who got hit by the ball during the warm-up against København.
Thanks to the medical staff, security and all club employees, as well as the fans who stood next to me and reacted immediately because it saved my life.

I cannot describe how grateful I am for their effort. It turned out that I have a brain tumor and I would not have detected it if Kamil Wilczek hadn’t hit me in the head with a ball. So I’m grateful to him too for what happened.
Especially since I would never be looked after by such professional medical staff as the present one. Now I’m going to have an operation. Thank you once again to everyone, I am eternally grateful to you ».

Brain tumor surgery was successful
David Nielsen underwent surgery to remove the tumor, which was successful.
– When I knew that everything went well, I was relieved. People only found out that it was a happy ending, and I spent a month working alone on it. After the surgery, we managed to meet at the Brøndby stadium. We walked and talked. We also took souvenir photos. We have contact until today – said Wilczek in 2017.

In 2019, Wilczek revealed that David had difficult moments after the surgery, and the rehabilitation lasted a long time. “I met him a few more times, and recently, when I had a difficult time myself, he wrote me a message,” the player said then.

Brain tumor – symptoms
All tumors, regardless of their origin, cause similar symptoms. Sometimes the symptoms are secretive, lasting for years, and sometimes they worsen rapidly after disclosure, even within a few weeks.
- Benign brain tumors – what to look for
Brain tumors produce two kinds of symptoms: general and local. The general ones depend on high intracranial pressure, while the focal ones depend on which part of the brain is oppressed by the tumor and what functions of the organism it is responsible for. These can be very different neurological symptoms, with varying degrees of severity.
