The patient lost his arm. Tight plaster may be to blame

When Mr. Krzysztof suffered a seemingly minor fracture in his wrist, he did not expect the consequences to be dramatic. The 35-year-old lost his hand. According to doctors from the hospital in Łódź, the cast was too tight in the facility where the man was initially admitted.

In an interview with Dziennik Łódzki, Aleksandra, the victim’s wife, revealed gross negligence on the part of the Pabianice Medical Center.

The couple live in Pabianice, so when Krzysztof was injured two weeks ago, they went to a local facility. There, a fracture was found and a cast was placed. The patient was discharged home as standard.

The next day, the man had a 40-degree fever, so he went to the emergency room again. First, we were told not to associate fever with plaster. Then my husband got two drips – said Aleksandra in an interview with Dziennik Łódzki. His plaster was cut but not removed. There was a swelling at the elbow. We heard that it’s normal to become inflamed.

The man returned home, but when the hand swelling also appeared at the level of the armpit, he went to the hospital again. He was not admitted to the ward – he only received an oral anti-inflammatory agent in the facility.

Then the sick wife decided to take matters into her own hands and removed the cast on her own. She decided to go elsewhere for help and took her husband to a hospital in Łódź.

On the spot, the doctors immediately concluded that the cast was too tight, which stopped blood circulation and caused inflammation. Mr. Krzysztof has undergone three surgeries, but his arm could not be saved. Doctors even said that it was necessary to save a life, not a limb.

The authorities of the hospital in Pabianice are investigating the case. Dr. Amer Houli, MD, the director of medical affairs at the facility, expressed his regret over the situation and assured him that if found guilty, he would be prosecuted.

The couple announced that they would seek compensation. Maria Wentlandt-Walkiewicz will represent them in court.
