Although it is difficult to predict how the number of infections will increase in the colder months, the government has already announced a possible return of face masks.

  1. The data of the Ministry of Health show an upward trend, but according to prof. Filipiak, these numbers are underestimated, because there are probably 10 or maybe 20 times more infections.
  2. The R index in Poland still exceeds the value of one, which means that more and more people are infected from each other and the COVID-19 epidemic is growing stronger.
  3. The deputy minister of health does not expect that COVID-19 will suddenly “go away”. In his opinion, an increase in the number of new infections is inevitable in the fall. The masks will probably come back as well, although it may not be for everyone.

Is this the apogee of the current wave of infections? Prof. Filipiak: “It’s reading tea leaves”

The number of infections and deaths is increasing week by week. While in June there were 1-2 thousand infections. per week, and deaths around 17-20, today it is 25 thousand. cases and over 100 victims of coronavirus in a similar period.

Minister Adam Niedzielski announced the peak of the summer COVID-19 wave in mid-August. Are we dealing with it? – It seems that the peak of the summer wave of diseases is passing right now, but it is all a bit like reading tea leaves – admits prof. dr hab. med. Krzysztof J. Filipiak, cardiologist, clinical pharmacologist, co-author of the first Polish textbook on COVID-19, rector of the Medical University of Maria Skłodowskiej-Curie in Warsaw.

The data of the Ministry of Health shows an upward trend, but according to prof. Filipiak, these numbers are underestimated, and there are probably 10 or maybe 20 times more infections.

The professor emphasized that the coronavirus is not a seasonal pathogen and we should no longer talk about spring, summer or autumn waves – increases are independent of the seasons. The professor is also concerned that no one controls the epidemiological situation.

The R index for Poland remains high. There is also other bad news

The Ministry of Health sent the editors of MedTvoiLokony the latest data on the R index (virus reproduction rate, RO) for Poland. Currently, it amounts to 1,18, which is the average number for all voivodships.

The R indicator is one of the elements used to assess the epidemiological situation in a given country. Thanks to it, we know how many healthy people can be infected by one person infected with the coronavirus. Currently, in Poland, it still exceeds the value of one, which means that more and more people are infected from each other and the COVID-19 epidemic is developing.

Another worrying indicator is the increase in RO compared to the end of July. As of July 30, the reproductive rate of the virus was 1,16, today it is 1,18. In addition, in as many as nine provinces the RO is higher than at the end of July.

Are there any masks waiting for us? The government has announced a “fall plan” and the return of the face and nose shield

Deputy Minister of Health Waldemar Kraska commented on the latest covid statistics on Polsat News. – There are 5964 new cases of coronavirus in Poland. This is an increase of about 5-5,5 percent. compared to last week, he said. He added that although we still see slight increases, the trend is already downward in our neighbors.

The politician stated that the government has already prepared a plan for the fall. There are several variants on the “table”, and the choice of the best one will be dictated by the current epidemiological situation. However, the deputy minister does not expect that COVID-19 will suddenly “give up”. – It seems that an increase in the number of new infections is inevitable in the fall. Now the only question is whether it will be the beginning of October or whether it will be in the long term. But there will certainly be a greater number, he admitted.

– The obligation to wear face masks will almost certainly return in connection with the next wave of coronavirus. It is very possible that people from the sensitive group, i.e. over 60, will have to cover the mouth and nose – he announced.
