The nurse abused the mentally ill. That’s how he was punished

Nurse Douglas Masson of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital has been fined by professional council for treating patients inappropriately. The nurse knocked on the paranoid patient’s door and disappeared. Thus, he aggravated his condition.

Douglas Masson has worked at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital for 30 years. As a nurse, he looked after the sick from the psychiatric ward. He was appreciated by his colleagues and respected by his superiors.

In 2017, a patient was admitted to the facility who suffered from various mental illnesses, including paranoia and paranoid states. Many times he thought he heard a knock on the door of his room, but when he opened it no one was there.

Scottish media do not specify how it happened, but the Nursing and Midwifery Council (the British equivalent of the Chamber of Nurses and Midwives) took up the matter and asked Masson to explain. The nurse pleaded guilty to this charge and expressed regret.

«The patient was at risk of psychological and emotional harm due to the misconduct of the nurse. At the same time, his behavior violated the basic principles of the profession and thus contributed to jeopardizing his reputation » can be read in the proceedings documents.

Therefore, the nurse was punished with the lowest possible penalty, the so-called warrant. For the next two years, he will be listed in a special register of the nursing self-government, along with an annotation of what he did. However, this does not affect the right to practice.

“You’ll never get out of here”

Masson was also charged with inadequately addressing patients. In one of the conversations, he said to the same inmate that he was delusional and would never leave the facility. Ultimately, these allegations were dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
