Monday is not a day of covid “records”. The number of infections recorded the previous day, Sunday, is usually lower than on other days of the week. Despite this, today’s data from the Ministry of Health are worrying. And they leave no illusions: the coronavirus is doing great, and the information that COVID-19 is a seasonal disease should be immediately put between fairy tales.
- The Ministry of Health (MZ) today announced 618 new coronavirus infections
- This is more than last Monday, when there were 589 infections
- No patient died from COVID-19 the previous day
- The last month is marked by a significant increase in the number of new cases. The summer wave of SARS-CoV-2 infections is the result of three factors: the emergence of new virus mutations, a decrease in vaccine immunity, and non-compliance with sanitary and epidemiological rules

On Monday, August 1, the health ministry announced that 618 people had tested positive for the coronavirus. 73 cases are reinfections. Five patients recovered. No deaths from COVID-19 have been reported.
On the last day, 2940 tests for the presence of coronavirus were performed.
The above figures differ significantly from those presented in the previous weeks. Last Monday, the Ministry of Health reported 589 infections with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, no patient died from COVID-19. On July 18, there were even fewer new infections – 319 (also no deaths), and a week earlier (July 11) – 227 cases, with no recorded deaths.
For comparison: a month ago (July 4), there were 119 positive tests, and at the end of June (the last Monday of the month) only 88.
Of course, these numbers do not reflect the real covid situation, because testing is still limited almost exclusively to hospitals where PCR tests are performed, the results of which are entered in the official registry. Doctors who perform quick antigen tests at POZ are also obliged to enter positive results, but – as our information shows – these tests are not performed very often. We wrote more about the case in the article below.
Poles willingly use home antigen tests, as evidenced by sales data from pharmacies. As Marcin Repelewicz from the Supreme Pharmaceutical Council recently reported, more than 40 such tests are sold daily in pharmacies (and some stores also offer this type of products).
Their results, however, remain a private matter of patients, but the fact that many of them are positive is evidenced by experts’ estimates. It is estimated that the daily number of coronavirus infections can be up to 20 times that reported by the official source of covid data.

The data of the Ministry of Health show that the highest number of new infections was detected in the following voivodeships: Mazowieckie, Śląskie and Małopolskie. Detailed information on the number of infections in these regions can be found in the charts below:
Why do we have so many infections in the middle of summer?
The current increases in the number of COVID-19 cases are the result of several factors. First, SARS-CoV-2 continues to mutate. Currently, the greatest concern is the subline of the Omikron variant, especially BA.5, which is extremely infectious and has the ability to bypass the immune response.
Secondly, our immune system is becoming more and more vulnerable to the coronavirus. Most of us took the last dose of the COVID-19 vaccine more than six months ago, some almost a year ago.
Of course, the worst situation is for those who are not vaccinated at all (they are at risk not only for the infection itself, but also for its severe course and death due to infection), but people after two or three doses are also more susceptible to the disease. But they have an ace up their sleeve: their immune system still ‘remembers’ exposure to the antigen or virus vector. Protection against severe illness and death from infection is still high.
Third, we are finally harvesting the toll of lifting all covid restrictions. It is not so much about lockdown or its elements, but most of all the basic sanitary and epidemiological principles: wearing protective masks, maintaining social distance, avoiding crowds, disinfecting hands. For the coronavirus, we are an ideal target of attack in such conditions.
