Holidays in Greece or Italy may no longer be a safe alternative to holidays in Spain and Portugal. The map of Europe published yesterday by ECDC shows that more and more countries liked by tourists are facing the Delta variant.
- The pandemic situations in Greece and Italy have worsened over the past two weeks. Croatia is also in the orange zone
- The balance sheet is still bad in Spain and Portugal, which keep the red and dark red color on the map, which means that there are the most new infections here
- The Azores, Crete, Rhodes, Corsica, Malta and the Canary Islands are also not a good destination
- More information can be found on the Onet homepage.
The situation in Europe is deteriorating. Especially where there are tourists
Basically from the moment the Delta variant slipped out of India, experts began to predict that it would become the dominant mutation. First of all, because of its high infectivity. Recently, it was also found that Delta multiplies more than 1000 times faster than the Wuhan virus. This makes it really easy to get infected with this variant of the virus.
Polish epidemiologists agree that due to the expansion of the Delta variant, Poland will face the fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic. In their opinion, it will happen in August or September. In some European countries, the gradual increase in infections has already started.

Currently, the most difficult pandemic situation is in Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands, and also in the British Isles. Things are also getting worse in Croatia, Greece and Denmark. Most of the countries hard hit by the Delta variant are crowded with tourists. This means that travelers returning from vacation can bring the virus with them, fueling the fourth wave of the pandemic also in zones where the situation is not yet serious.
ECDC pandemic map. More and more red points
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) publishes a map of Europe every week, which shows the current pandemic situation in the Old Continent. It is considered the most important in the European Union – it is on the basis of this map that the authorities of the states decide on the introduction of restrictions, including the conditions for the entry of foreigners into the territory of a given country.
ECDC uses colors to signal COVID-19 incidence levels. Green means that there were fewer than 14 cases per 50 people in the area in the last 100 days. residents. In the case of orange, the increase in the number of COVID-19 infections over two weeks was greater than 50 but less than 75 per 100. Croatia, Greece (which is also partly red), part of Italy, France and Denmark are currently in the orange zone.
- Editors recommend: Italy: more vaccinations. Restrictions and prohibitions take effect
The worst pandemic situation in a given area is indicated by red and dark red colors. The former marks an area where within 14 days the number of new coronavirus cases increased by 75 – 500 cases per 100. inhabitants (this is the case in Portugal, partly in Spain, Malta, the Azores, the Canary Islands, Corsica and Ireland). When we are dealing with more than 500 cases per 100 inhabitants, the area goes to the dark red zone. Currently, parts of Spain and the Netherlands, as well as Crete and Martinique, fall into this category.
A vacation in the south of Europe may not be the best idea
Comparing the weeks of July 8-14 and July 15-21, it is clear that the number of dark red areas in Spain has increased, almost all of France has turned from green to yellow, and selected regions of Italy (including Sardinia and Sicily) and Ireland have also become yellow. Yellow and red colors also appeared in Greece.
The July 15 ECDC recommendations are available below:
Taking into account the current pandemic situation, a trip to the most popular holiday resorts does not seem to be a safe solution. It is in these tourist centers that the number of infections with the Delta variant is growing the fastest. This means that by choosing one of these popular holiday destinations, we risk infection for ourselves, but also for people around us.
When choosing a holiday abroad, we have to take into account that pandemic regulations will change during the trip. This may include quarantine upon returning home or prior to entering a desired resort.
We remind you: the best way to protect yourself against infection with the Delta variant is to fully vaccinate against COVID-19, as well as follow safety rules – social distancing and disinfection are the key.
