The Naked Grouse (Naked Grus or Naked Partridge)

The Naked Grouse is a premium blended whiskey with a high content of quality single malts. The name of the drink is translated as “naked partridge”. This bird is the national symbol of Scotland. Whiskey is bottled at the Glenturret factory in Perthshire, located in the central part of the country.

Historical information

The area where the Glenturret distillery is located has long been known as a place for clandestine whiskey production. The first mention of this fact is found in documents dated 1775. A small distillery called Hosh operated illegally until 1818, when the owner, John Drummond, received a license to produce whiskey.

In 1875 the plant was renamed Glenturret. At the beginning of the 1921th century, the company was owned by Mitchell Brothers Ltd, which faced a crisis in the industry associated with the outbreak of the First World War. In 30, production was stopped, and later the owners themselves went bankrupt. The premises of the distillery were used for warehouses for agricultural machinery for XNUMX years.

Production resumed only in 1959, when the company was bought by James Fairley, a great enthusiast of his business. In 1990, the distillery was taken over by Highland Distillers and became the official whiskey hub for The Famous Grouse.

The Famous Partridge blend was created by winemaker Matthew Gloag in 1896. The founder of the wine and spirits business worked with the best suppliers in Scotland, and his authorship blends have been popular in the country since 1860.

Whiskey The Naked Grouse was released in 2011 as an addition to the famous line. But six years later, the company announced the withdrawal of the brand from The Famous Grouse family in connection with its separation into a separate brand.

Production features

The Naked Grouse blend is the result of many years of research conducted by the leading masters of the company, John Ramsay and Gordon Motion. The blend is made from Glenturret, Highland Park and Macallan single malts aged in American and European oak casks. For the last six months, spirits have been moved into containers from the Spanish Oloroso sherry. Then the drink is diluted with soft water from the Loch Turret river, and bottled with an unusual design. The manufacturer refused to use the label – the neck is provided with a label with the name of the brand, and the image of a partridge is squeezed out on the glass.

Interesting Facts

  1. The Glenturret plant buys barley grown in different parts of Scotland. It is noteworthy that the distillery still uses the technology of malting on the floor, which most producers abandoned in the late 60s of the XX century.
  2. The facility operates the Famous Grouse Experience visitor center. Guests visit one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, and then take part in a whiskey tasting from the famous line.
