Patients of the hospital of the Ministry of the Interior in Olsztyn, waiting for a procedure or a visit to a specialist doctor, will listen to music from the loudspeakers. The compositions were selected to relieve stress and improve the mood of patients. Music is supposed to support oncological treatment.
Rafał Bezuch, a spokesman for the Olsztyn polyclinic, told PAP on Thursday that this form of music therapy has been conducted for several days in the waiting room in the hematology department and to specialist doctors and in the so-called one-day chemotherapy. It works, people are calmer – he assured.
According to the author of this idea, doctor Ewa Wasilewska-Teśluk, music from the loudspeakers is an attempt to find a way to relieve patients’ stress. At her request, a music journalist, Marcin Kydryński, prepared a list of songs suitable for patients who need peace and quiet. We wanted to take advantage of his knowledge of original and calm music from all over the world – she explained.
Patients with oncological diseases will listen to, among others Charles Aznavour’s ballads, Sting and Portuguese Fado songs. As Kydryński wrote, all selected pieces carry one of the most miraculous medicines of mankind, which is the sensitive human voice.
As assessed by the psycho-oncologist Emilia Piskorz-Jary, listening to music during oncological treatment can be a source of emotional support. It helps to regulate blood pressure and lower the level of the stress hormone. This is especially true for those patients who develop anxiety, anxiety and depression.
In her opinion, the effectiveness of this method has been confirmed by research and medical publications on pain relief and mood disorders. They show that the positive effects of reducing anxiety in patients undergoing chemotherapy can be achieved after the first 30 minutes of music therapy.
According to the director of the Olsztyn polyclinic, Janusz Chełchowski, the music in the waiting room and during the therapy proves that the facility is patient-friendly. Playing music is regulated by the contract with ZAiKS. As he announced, another innovative solution will be the creation of a therapeutic garden in front of the hospital (PAP)
