The most unusual baby names announced – 2018

Iago and Semiramis, Dobromira and Ambrose now live in Moscow.

While the stars show a tendency to call children simple Russian names, ordinary mothers and fathers are trying to come up with something like that for their child. And these are not empty words. For example, young mothers Anna Khilkevich and Lera Kudryavtseva named their newborn daughters Masha. The most that neither is a Russian name. But in the report of the Moscow registry office there are names that are much more curious.

From the beginning of the year, the boys Donald, Walter, Iago, Tomislav and Aramis were born in Moscow. Apparently, one of the parents is a fan of Dumas’ novels. There are also unusual names with Slavic and Greek roots: Svyatopolk, Ambrose, Dar, Polycarp, Leonty, Domislav, Severyan, Nikanor and even Eustathius. Against the background of such delights Savely, Luke, Elisha and Gordeya look no longer archaisms at all.

Parents of girls also do not suffer from a lack of imagination. Together with Shakespeare’s Iago, the heroine of another tragedy of the English writer, Juliet, was born. And also Semiramis, Camellia, Chloe, Lolita and – unexpectedly – Lyalya are growing up. There is a girl with the fabulous name Gerda. We seem to know her parents’ favorite fairy tale. But these are not all the rare names invented for girls. Ladislav and Dobromir, Glykeria and Ladomir, Stepanid and Mstislav, Iva, Muse and Vesna received birth certificates.

According to employees of the Civil Registry Office, rare names are usually given to children born in mixed marriages, where one of the parents is a foreigner. But in general, the situation is quite normal.

“Recently, we have not observed any noticeable tendency towards an increase in the number of unusual names in newborns. On the contrary, Muscovites are increasingly calling their children the traditional names used by their mothers, fathers, grandfathers and grandmothers, ”said Irina Muravyova, head of the Moscow Civil Registry Office.

As for the popular names, they remain unchanged. Boys are most often called Alexandra, Mikhail and Maxim. Girls – Sophia, Maria and Anna.
