The most typical dishes of Soria and how to prepare them

One of the main advantages of living in Spain is the great gastronomy of the country, which, of course, has become one of the reasons why millions of people from abroad visit us every year.

However, as a general rule, this tourism focuses on cities such as Madrid or Barcelona, ​​and coastal areas, but what would happen if these people visited less known parts of the Spanish geography such as the city of Soria?

The torreznos

The most typical dish of Soria par excellence, so if you visit this region, this should be the first dish you try. In simple words, torreznos are fried bacon strips.

Its preparation is simple, but requires the repeating the same step 3 to 4 times:

  • The bacon strips are placed with the rind side down in a frying pan with cold oil.
  • The oil is slowly heated.
  • When bubbles begin to form, remove the pan from the heat.
  • Then wait for the oil to cool down and repeat these steps.
  • Finally, the fire is high and the bacon is fried.

These simple steps allow you to enjoy a dish that, as you may not know, has its own prize; “The Best Torrezno in the World”, organized by the Torrezno de Soria Guarantee Brand, held annually and whose last winner was Fernando Arranz, owner of the Piscis Bar Restaurant in the capital of Soria.

And, despite its simple preparation, a quality torrezno stands out, beyond its flavor, for its perfect proportion of bubbles or tender and pink lean.

Another very typical Soria dish is roast lamb, also typical of Spanish gastronomy for many generations. It stands out for its tender and intense flavor, regardless of the area of ​​Spain in which we try this dish, although of course, it is prepared in very different ways based on the region in which you are savoring it.

In Soria there are also numerous varieties in terms of its preparation. One of the best known and most used is the following:

  • The lamb is placed in a clay pot with the skin on the bottom.
  • The oven begins to heat up.
  • It is rubbed with garlic and butter.

Another very traditional dish from Soria, and related to lamb is the stew, although this can be prepared with other types of meat. Its elaboration is carried out as follows:

  • Put the meat in a saucepan with oil.
  • The onion, green peppers and tomato are added.
  • Then the garlic heads, chilli, paprika and salt are added.
  • Cover the meat with water and let the meat cook over low heat for an hour and a half.

Truffle

Another great dish typical of Soria are black truffles, which of course, you should also try when you visit this area. This food comes from a very typical tree of this province, the holm oaks.

Such is the amount existing in this area that it has been called the “Truffle of Soria”.

In this case, it is not necessary to explain the production process, however, we do mention that it is used as a flavor enhancer in numerous recipes, it is used to prepare soup or pasta dishes and, as with torreznos, different events are held around. to this.

Boletus and mushrooms

In addition to the large number of holm oaks present, this area is characterized by the abundance of boletus and mushrooms, being Soria a perfect place to find both a large number and a variety.
