It is the first designation of wine origin in the world. This is determined by researchers and winemakers, dating from the XNUMXth century to the Tokaj region, in Hungary. In 2002, with some 7.000 hectares of extension, it was declared World Heritage Site by Unesco and it is that its vineyards produce a very particular grape.

The recognition is due to the fact that it is a sweet wine, unique for the particularity of the grapes with which it is made, prone to raisin and that depend on a fungus called «botrytis cinerea» which dries the grapes on the vine and turns them into what looks like raisins, a process known as “Noble rot.” Thus, grapes have a high sugar content and an aroma that makes them unique.

Hailing from the Carpathian slopes of northeastern Hungary, the Royal Tokaji winery now produces what has become the most expensive wine in the world. Your bottle “Royal Tokaji Essencia 2008” went on the market with a price of 4U.S. dollar 0.000 (about 35.500 euros), a limited edition of which there are only 20 unique 1.5-liter magnum bottles, designed by the Hungarian artist James Carcass.

Each of the decanters comes in a black lacquered box with a switch that illuminates the bottle, it is specially hand-blown, which means that no two are completely identical. According to CNN, at least 11 of the bottles have already been sold.

A unique wine in the world

To make an Essencia wine, the Hungarian company has to collect small amounts of “essence” from each bunch of grapes. The end result is a fine, thick and delicious wine that is usually served in glass spoons to appreciate each note.

Although Essence 2008 has been on sale before, it is the exclusivity of the particular set that makes decanters so much more valuable than a standard bottle.

Royal Tokaji had to obtain a special permit from the Hungarian government to bottle Essencia in 1.5 liter containers, as current laws only allow a maximum capacity of 0.5 liters. The unusual carafe design was apparently inspired by wine “slowly dripping from individually picked aszu berries.”

“It really is unique”said Charlie Mount, managing director of Royal Tokaji. “I don’t know if we can ever repeat it.”.

The essence can only be produced in years with more or less perfect climatic conditions for botrytis. And 2008 marked a particularly good year.
