The most dangerous weeks and periods of pregnancy

In certain weeks, you need to be especially careful with yourself. There are times when the fetus goes through key moments in its development, and at this time it is very easy to lose the baby.

My pregnancy froze at 8 weeks. The fruit just stopped developing.

A friend lost her twin girls at 38 weeks. Intrauterine infection. There were just over ten days left before the planned cesarean …

Another friend had a late miscarriage in the 19th week. Unfortunately, they still do not know how to care for such crumbs …

40 weeks – nine months with a ponytail, the woman wears under the heart of the baby. The expectation is pleasant, but it is also painful: how does the long-awaited child grow and develop there? And even if a woman is very careful, there are times when the risk of termination of pregnancy increases. Including for reasons that little depend on the expectant mother.

The first trimester is the most important in the entire pregnancy. But he is also considered the most dangerous. It is not for nothing that many women, up to the first ultrasound, do not tell anyone about the replenishment in the family. At this time, all organs and systems of the baby are laid, but the placenta, which protects him, begins to form only in the middle of the trimester, and the process ends by the 12-13th week. There are three critical periods in the first trimester.

2-3 weeks

You may not even know that you are pregnant yet. At this stage, the fertilized egg attaches to the walls of the uterus. This is called the implantation period, which quite often ends in failure for a variety of reasons: stress, physical activity, alcohol or nicotine consumption in large quantities, fetal developmental abnormalities, scar or uterine fibroids, and so on.

As a result, a miscarriage occurs, which the woman does not even notice: it all looks like menstruation, which may have been a little late.

4-6 weeks

Perhaps you already had a delay and, if you did the test, it showed two stripes. But, as a rule, at this time the woman is still waiting for her period. She can calmly lead her usual lifestyle with parties and excesses, take various pills, not suspecting that at this moment a new living organism is forming in her uterus. As a result, the risk of developing severe fetal pathologies increases, which can lead to abortion or abnormalities in its further development.

8-11 weeks

You already know for sure that you are pregnant. You are tormented by toxicosis, your chest hurts and swells, you want to sleep all the time … in general, everything is going according to plan. But at some point, you notice blood stains on your underwear. Or pulls on the lower abdomen. Or maybe you don’t feel anything unusual, but just come to the doctor at the appointed time. And you hear: “We are very sorry …”

At this time in the body – we repeat – the placenta begins to form. There is a cardinal hormonal change. Any violations: an excess of testosterone, a lack of estrogen, disruption of the endocrine system, thyroid gland, hematological problems – anything can provoke a developmental arrest or miscarriage. And even histological examination will not always be able to identify its cause.

He is usually the calmest. Toxicosis is gone, you feel a surge of strength and energy. The baby is not pushing yet, the stomach is just beginning to grow, there is no discomfort. You can travel, lead an active lifestyle.

But you shouldn’t forget about caution either. After all, in this trimester there is one dangerous period. It falls on 18-21 weeks pregnancy, it’s about 4,5-5 months… At this time, a woman may experience a so-called late miscarriage. This is not yet a premature birth, they can take from 22 weeks and leave a baby even weighing 500 grams, and sometimes even less. But a shorter period, which means less weight, is no longer even prematurity. Most likely, nothing can be done here. Therefore, when nursing children weighing the size of a can of soda, it is a real miracle.

The reasons for a late miscarriage can vary. Most often, this is isthmic-cervical insufficiency, when the cervix is shortened ahead of time, relaxes, opens and cannot hold the fetus. In fact, this is labor activity, which can be stopped by suturing or installing a pessary. But not always a woman can get to the doctor on time.

Also among the reasons are improper placement or abruption of the placenta and sexually transmitted infections, which can provoke leakage of amniotic fluid.

Now the home stretch. You can go on maternity leave, calmly prepare for childbirth. It would seem that all the dangers are over. But the key word here is “it seemed.”

The last dangerous period – 28-32 weeksThat is, 7-8 obstetric months… At this time, the expectant mother may begin premature birth. They can be provoked by the same reasons as in the second trimester, as well as late toxicosis (gestosis), hormonal disruptions, polyhydramnios or, conversely, lack of water, as well as a malfunction of the placenta – this is called placental insufficiency, intrauterine infections – they can do lead to fetal death.

On the one hand, by this time the child is already fully formed. On the other hand, it is quite difficult to care for a premature baby. By the way, it is believed that a seven-month-old baby is more likely to survive than one who was born at 8 months. This is due to the fact that at the eighth month, the baby’s lungs are just beginning to form. And, if the process stops, the baby will not be able to breathe on his own, and modern equipment that will help in this situation is not available in all maternity hospitals.

A WORD TO THE EXPERT

Tatiana MIKHANOVA, gynecologist:

– First of all, do not think about the bad. Now is the eighth week, which means that now I will definitely bleed. Eliminate stress, provide yourself with a calm lifestyle for these periods. Of course, during pregnancy, sex is not prohibited, but during these weeks, sexual rest is desirable. It is better not to plan long trips for critical periods. If you really have discomfort or strange discharge, do not pull, immediately contact your doctor. Especially if you are at risk. Having gone “to save” in time, you almost certainly carry the baby.
