The three main symptoms of COVID-19 are cough, fever, and shortness of breath. Apart from them, other symptoms appear in the course of the disease, but they are not as common as the three main ones. One of them appears even more often than the others. What to look for?

  1. Fever is the most common symptom of COVID-19. Depending on the research, 74 to 86 percent complain about it. people with confirmed infection with SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus
  2. Unfortunately, temperature screening tests do not prevent COVID-19 transmission in the community

The most common symptom of COVID-19 is fever

Fever is the most common symptom of COVID-9, according to a study published on November 19 in The Journal of Emergency Medicine. Scientists studied almost 12 thousand. people with confirmed infection. 74 percent of them complained of fever, 68% felt shortness of breath, and 65 percent. reported coughing.

Similar results were given by a recent Spanish study, which shows that among hospitalized COVID-19 patients (over 12 respondents), 86 percent. reported a fever, 76 percent complained of coughing, and 60 percent for shortness of breath.

Fever is a common reaction of the body to viral, bacterial or other pathogen infection and shows that the body is resisting infection. Fever, along with coughing and shortness of breath, is considered to be one of the main symptoms of COVID-19. For this reason, temperature control is introduced, for example, before entering a hospital, so that a potentially infected person can be “caught”. Does this work? Unfortunately, not always.

Temperature screening does not work

Can measuring the temperature in public places – at airports, in hospitals, in front of the entrance to a shopping mall, actually help to limit the spread of COVID-19? Research shows that not necessarily. First, the absence of a fever or even a low-grade fever does not mean that we are not infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Not everyone develops a fever, and it is not always the first symptom.

It is worth checking: When do we infect most effectively?

Approx. 40 percent COVID-19 infections may be asymptomatic, which means that infected people may unknowingly transmit the virus on. Research also shows that screening temperature is not a sufficient way to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In a paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers suggest that measuring temperature and screening for common symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection are insufficient for detecting the infection and preventing further transmission. The article describes the case of a group of 2000 military recruits where COVID-19 spread despite strict quarantine measures, regular temperature controls, and other symptoms.

Another study found that screening for fever at airports successfully detected only 15 cases of COVID-19 out of 675 passengers checked.

As SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is highly contagious and can spread through asymptomatic people or before symptoms appear, it is important to take basic precautions to minimize the risk of infection. Therefore, it is worth keeping a distance, wearing a mask, avoiding crowds, especially those staying in poorly ventilated rooms, and regularly washing or disinfecting your hands. If we have a suspicion that we may have contracted the coronavirus, please consult your GP for a referral for a test. Only in this way can we limit the transmission of the infection.
