Bacterial diseases are diseases that are caused by harmful bacteria, also called pathogens. In the event of a disease, bacteria passively or actively enter the body and, as they multiply, trigger a response of the immune system. Bacterial diseases are accompanied by inflammation, fever, vomiting or diarrhea. What are the most common bacterial diseases?

Bacterial diseases – angina

Angina is one of the most common bacterial diseases. It is also called acute tonsillitis. It is caused by strains of streptococcus. The first symptom of angina is a sore throat when you swallow saliva or food. Then other symptoms appear, including: fever, headache, joint pain, vomiting and general malaise. Ignoring the symptoms of angina and not starting treatment may result in complications in the form of rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis in the future. Angina is treated with penicillin or other antibiotics prescribed by a doctor. Home remedies are also recommended for treating angina, such as gargling with hydrogen peroxide, salt solution or sage infusion.

Bacterial diseases – diphtheria

Diphtheria is a bacterial disease also called diphtheria. It is caused by a bacterium called ‘coryneform diphtheria’. The first symptoms of diphtheria are: grayish membranes on the throat, sore throat, fever and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. As the disease progresses, there are difficulties swallowing saliva and food, problems with breathing, and an increase in heart rate. Diphtheria is transmitted by droplets, which is why it is most often infected by sneezing or coughing a sick person. You can get vaccinated against diphtheria by having the pertussis and tetanus vaccine. Treatment of diphtheria consists of taking diphtheria antitoxin and antibiotics such as penicillin and erythromycin.

Bacterial diseases – Lyme disease

Lyme disease is a multisystem infectious disease caused by bacteria belonging to the spirochetes. The disease is transmitted to humans by ticks. The infection occurs through the saliva or vomit of the tick. The earliest symptom of Lyme disease is erythema, which is characterized by peripheral expansion and central resolution. Other symptoms of Lyme disease include symptoms that may resemble flu symptoms, such as fever, headache and general weakness. The early symptoms of Lyme disease pass after about 3 months and some people develop disseminated Lyme disease. It can take the form of neuroborreliosis, arthritis or, less frequently, myocarditis. Lyme disease is treated with antibiotics, mainly penicillins, cephalosporins and tetracyclines.

Bacterial diseases – gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a bacterial venereal disease caused by gonorrhea. The symptoms of gonorrhea vary depending on the gender of the sufferer. In the case of gonorrhea, abnormal vaginal discharge appears in women, and the menstrual cycle is also disturbed. Gonorrhea in men is manifested by purulent discharge from the urethra and a burning sensation when urinating. Untreated gonorrhea can lead to serious diseases, including: female infertility, inflammation of the fallopian tubes, arthritis, and damage to the heart, liver and kidneys. Treatment of gonorrhea is based on the intramuscular administration of penicillin or ceftriaxone.
