10 New Athos cave
New Athos cave opens the top ten of the most beautiful and amazing Abkhazian places that tourists must visit. It is located in the depths of the Iverskaya mountain. It belongs to the genus of karst caves, which was formed during the melting of limestone rocks, which took place over several million years. The discovery of this unique place, created by nature itself, took place in the early 60s of the last century. The New Athos cave received such a nickname from the locals as the Bottomless Pit, due to the fact that it has very deep cavities and landslides. The length of the cave is more than two kilometers. For its complete examination, a special excursion train operates here. There are eight halls in total, where the majestic and bewitching beauties of nature are hidden.
9. Gorge Stone Bag
Gorge “Stone Bag” or the Yupshar gorge is one of the best places in Akhazia that you should definitely visit. It is located near Lake Ritsa. Of greatest interest is the Yupsharsky canyon, which arose during the formation of a huge crack in the rock. The Yupsharskaya gorge got its first name because of its amazing resemblance to a bag. This miracle of nature spread for as much as 8 kilometers. At the entrance, the width of the gorge is about a hundred meters, but the further the traveler plunges into the depths, the narrower the passage becomes, and at the end of the path it becomes very narrow – only 20 cm.
8. Blue Lake
Blue Lake – an amazingly beautiful place in Abkhazia, where you should definitely visit. The brightly saturated blue color determined the name of this miracle of nature. Calm always reigns here on the surface of the water, despite the fact that the waters of a mountain tributary rush into the lake. The uniqueness of this lake lies in the fact that it is never covered with ice. Moreover, no one lives in it. Scientists suggest that the lake got its unique color because of the lapis lazuli that lines its bottom. There is a local legend saying that a person who swims in this lake will gain eternal youth.
7. Krubera Cave
Krubera Cave – one of the most unique places in Abkhazia, located in Gagra. It is a very deep karst cave that goes underground for more than 2 kilometers. It was discovered by Abkhaz speleologists, but it was customary to name it in honor of one of the best Russian speleologists Kruber, who is the founder of karst studies. The discovery of this amazing and beautiful place took place in the early 60s of the last century. The entrance to the cave is located at an altitude of more than 2 thousand meters.
6. Colonnade in Gagrah
Colonnade in Gagrah – a beautiful place in Abkhazia, founded in the middle of the last century. Initially, it was built as part of the Winter Theater, located near the Seaside Park. Local builders worked on the construction of the building for two years. Now the colonnade serves as an entrance to the local beach. It stretched along the embankment for 60 meters. The structure has four towers, which are interconnected by arches. The colonnade in Gagra is primarily famous for being featured in the Soviet film Night in Gagra. Tourists and locals love this place also because it offers a surprisingly picturesque view of the Black Sea.
5. Seaside Park
Seaside Park refers to exotic parks located in Gagra. Its foundation took place by order of the Prince of Oldenburg at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is located on an area of 14 hectares. Vegetation in the park was brought literally from all tropical places on our planet. Here you can find very rare and beautiful plants. In total, over 4 hundred representatives of flora species are represented in the park. In addition to exotic vegetation, you can also find living creatures in the form of swans and peacocks. In the heart of this most beautiful place, a building from the 6th century, once a temple, has been preserved. Now in this building there is a weapons museum. This amazing man-made park does not leave any visitor indifferent.
4. Embankment of Mahadzhirs
Embankment of Mahadzhirs – one of the most visited and picturesque places, located in Sukhumi. A large number of architectural sights of historical value are concentrated in this part of the city. In addition to architectural structures, this place is distinguished by lush exotic vegetation.
3. Gek Falls
Gek Falls – an incredibly picturesque place of Abkhazia, which fascinates literally every traveler with its beauty and grandeur. It was formed thanks to river flows that break out of the bowels of a karst cave. It is located at a height of five hundred meters, and its waters rush down at a height of 70 meters. You can find this miracle of nature in the northern part of the Geg Range, in the place where two rivers converge – Yupshara and Gega. It was in this amazing place that some scenes from the famous Soviet film about Sherlock Holmes were filmed. It is not only very beautiful, but also very cool at any time of the year.
2. Castle of the Prince of Oldenburg
Castle of the Prince of Oldenburg – one of the most beautiful sights of Abkhazia. This architectural structure is located on one of the slopes of the mountain in Gagra. The castle was built at the beginning of the twentieth century according to the project of the architect Luceransky. The majestic architectural building is made in a modernist style, it has huge balconies, stained-glass windows, towers and chimneys. You can get to the castle with a tour group.
1. Sukhumi Botanical Garden
Sukhumi Botanical Garden is the oldest in Abkhazia. This is a very picturesque and amazing place created by human hands. The garden was formed a century and a half ago on the initiative of the doctor Bagrinovsky, who decided to diversify the vegetation of the city. The huge territory of the garden, which includes 30 hectares, is divided into fifty plots where various exotic plants grow in the form of flower and tree crops. Also in the garden there is a Monkey Nursery, which tourists love to visit.
