Start COVID-19 vaccine Frequently asked questions Where can I get vaccinated? Check if you can get vaccinated

The abortion was not carried out specifically to collect the cells – tissue fragments were used after the procedure, which would have taken place regardless of this, experts from the Polish Academy of Sciences wrote. Their position is a response to last week’s statement by the Polish Bishops’ Conference that AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines raise moral objection.

  1. The echoes of the recent statement by the President of the Team of Experts of the Polish Bishops’ Conference on Bioethics on AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are still echoing
  2. Bishop Józef Wróbel stated that their production, which uses cell lines created on biological material collected from aborted fetuses, raises serious moral objection
  3. Now experts of the Polish Academy of Sciences have spoken about the morality of vaccination against COVID-19

Vaccinations against COVID-19 and morality. What is the position of the Polish Academy of Sciences?

– The production of AstraZeneki and Johnson & Johnson vaccines uses cell lines created on biological material collected from aborted fetuses. This raises moral objection – Bishop Józef Wróbel, chairman of the Team of Experts of the Polish Bishops’ Conference for Bioethics, said a few days ago. His words met with criticism from many Polish experts, virologists and immunologists.

Now the official position was presented by members of the interdisciplinary COVID-19 advisory team at the Polish Academy of Sciences.

«In the case of COVID-19, vector vaccines were created based on adenoviruses (DNA viruses that cause mild symptoms in humans, including those associated with the respiratory system), from which the genes responsible for the formation of key elements of the pathogen have been deleted. These removed fragments have been replaced with a DNA fragment that allows the production of the S protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Such an artificial and defective virus cannot multiply in our tissues or cause disease, it is a vector, i.e. a carrier that supplies the cells of the vaccinated person with the matrix for the production of the S protein, and as a result prepares our immune system for contact with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This is how the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines work, among others.

  1. Will the doctor decide not to vaccinate AstraZeneca?

For the production of such vaccines, it is necessary to use cells specially prepared in a laboratory. (…) Without such cells, this process would not be possible»- we read on the website of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The abortion was not specifically done to get the cells

What are experts writing next about vector vaccines produced by AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson?

“First, the cells from which the HEK293 and PER.C6 lines were derived were harvested several decades ago and have been grown in the laboratory ever since. The abortion was not specifically performed to collect the cells – tissue fragments were used after the procedure, which would have taken place regardless of. The use of these cells does not in any way influence or promote abortion procedures currently under way.

Second, the vaccine itself does not contain HEK293 and PER.C6 cells, just as drugs produced by bacteria or fungi do not contain fragments of these microorganisms. The cells only serve as bioreactors responsible for a certain stage in the production of a vaccine. The preparation is then cleaned of any biological contamination. This is one stage that is closely monitored by many institutions, including the EMA.

Third, the vaccine saves lives. COVID-19 carries a very high risk for all of us, including pregnant women

Discouraging vaccination with vector preparations when we record several hundred deaths a day due to COVID-19 is irresponsible and is associated with consent to thousands of deaths and severe post-sickness complications»- reads the declaration signed by eleven experts.

“Vaccines are not made from aborted fetuses”

The position of the Polish Bishops’ Conference a few days ago was also commented on by one of the most famous virologists in the country, Dr. Tomasz Dzieiątkowski.

– Cell lines are clones of cells that are grown in vitro and are essential for the multiplication of all viruses. The use of these cell lines is not a whim of researchers, scientists or producers, but a painful necessity. If any of the priests come up with a way to be able to multiply all human viruses effectively in a different way, please contact me and give specific suggestions – explained Dzieiątkowski.

  1. Vaccinations against COVID-19. What is the schedule for the upcoming immunization? [SCHEDULE]

It needs to be emphasized vaccines are not made from aborted fetuses. Certain vaccine viruses or viruses serving as vectors are at best multiplied in cell lines that were derived from aborted fetuses half a century ago. Since then, abortions have certainly been taking place, but there is no need to harvest new cells or intentionally abort the fetuses to lead to these cell lines, because they already exist, the expert added.
