The mirror will tell the truth… What does our skin say about health?
The mirror will tell the truth… What does our skin say about health?

The condition of our skin is a reflection of our care and eating habits. However, irregularities such as swelling or excessive skin dryness can be an important signal that the body is not in as good a condition as we expected.

For the sake of your own health, it is worth finding time and focusing on the cause, instead of ignoring the signals that our body sends.

The influence of hormones on the appearance of the skin

Teenagers going through a hormonal storm are faced with an increase in the activity of the sebaceous glands, which can lead to the development of acne vulgaris. If acne develops in people between the ages of 25 and 30, it indicates a hormonal imbalance.

When the menopause passes, the production of female hormones decreases, and with it the skin loses its previous firmness, hydration, wrinkles and cellulite or stretch marks appear in many women.

Alarming signals

  • Edema may be local or generalized. Unless there is an injury, local edema results from abnormalities in lymph circulation, such as cancer, parasitic diseases or erysipelas, as well as from allergies, inflammation or venous circulation disorders, which include thrombophlebitis and venous insufficiency.
  • On the other hand, general edema may suggest liver cirrhosis, heart failure, malnutrition, hypothyroidism, nephrotic syndrome, malabsorption syndrome, cancer, sepsis or ulceration.
  • Edema also accompanies women in the last trimester of pregnancy.
  • Itching occurs in the course of cancer, parasitic and allergic diseases, in disorders of the nervous system, liver and kidney function, psoriasis or diabetes.
  • Skin dryness is present with malnutrition, atherosclerosis of blood vessels, hypothyroidism, sunburn and the use of detergents. It also appears in diabetics.

A different skin color

The yellow color is at best an excess of beta carotene. Worse, if it shows hypothyroidism, diseases of the gallbladder or liver.

Pallor appears with emotional reactions as well as excessive physical fatigue. It goes hand in hand with anorexia and bulimia, anemia and deficiencies of erythrocytes, hemoglobin or vitamin D. It often indicates hypothyroidism, leukemia, hypoglycemia, heart diseases and infectious diseases.

Pigment changes, such as freckles, chloasma or lentigines, may inform us about pregnancy, hyperthyroidism, or about a reaction to cosmetic or medicinal preparations.

Redness is an indication of high blood pressure, rosacea, or lupus.
