The miracle supplement turned out to be a bleach

Nearly one-third of the Miracle Mineral Supplement advertised on the Internet consists of potentially dangerous sodium chlorite (NaClO2), warns BBC News / Health.

Miracle Mineral Supplement (MMS) contains 28 percent. sodium chlorite, used, inter alia, to disinfect water and as a disinfectant in the meat industry. Under the influence of acids – for example citric acid – it releases strongly disinfecting and bleaching chlorine dioxide.

Online advertising touts Miracle Mineral Supplement liquid or tablets as a universal remedy for everything from HIV and hepatitis to the H1N1 flu. 100 milliliters of solution can cost as much as £ 33, which is a high price tag for bleach.

Even when used as directed, MMS can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and misuse could lead to respiratory failure. The Food Standards Agency is trying to track down sellers of this miracle drug in the UK and recommends throwing away the fraudulent supplement. (PAP)
