A new way to report deaths due to COVID-19

So far, the Ministry of Health has provided the number of deaths due to COVID-19 broken down by age, sex and place of death. It was also usually noted at the end of the communication that most or all of the deceased had comorbidities.

Recently, the number of deaths due to COVI-19 in Poland has increased. It has not yet broken the record from April, when on April 24.04, the ministry reported 40 deaths due to COVID-19.

Today, new information appeared in the Ministry of Health’s announcement. After reporting the number of new people infected with the coronavirus in individual provinces, a message about the number of deaths appeared. This time it was broken into two parts. MZ reported that six people died due to COVID-19, and 19 people died due to the coexistence of COVID-30 with other diseases. Together, this amounts to 36 deaths.

Where did this change come from?

– From today, we changed the way of reporting deaths. In line with the trend in other countries, the breakdown into deaths typically due to COVID-19 and deaths due to coexistence of COVID-19 with other diseases, more fully reflects the course of the epidemic. At the same time, it shows the society what the risk of COVID-19 is in the coexistence of other diseases – Wojciech Andrusiewicz, spokesman for the Ministry of Health, answered our question.

Change in reporting the number of tests performed

A cosmetic change also appeared in the announcement regarding the number of COVID-19 tests performed per day. Today, the Ministry of Health has provided the total number of tests performed (over 23,1 thousand) and the number of tests ordered by POZ: 14, of which 776 during the last 2 hours.

According to the announcements of the Minister of Health, Adam Niedzielski, primary care physicians were included in the system of testing patients suspected of being infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. After the announcement of this decision, there were many critical voices from the medical community, especially when the minister announced that referral for the test would be possible after the prior visit of the suspected patient at the facility. Some said directly that the new decision would make health care facilities a breeding ground for the coronavirus.
