We limit the availability of amantadine to its use beyond medical indications, announced the spokesman of the Ministry of Health Wojciech Andrusiewicz on Wednesday. Where did this decision come from and when is it effective?

In the announcement of the Ministry of Health published on December 8, it was stated that from December 10, the amount of Viregyt-K (Amantadini hydrochloridum) medicinal product per one patient in a public pharmacy or pharmacy point will be limited to no more than three packages of 50 capsules per 30 days.
It was also indicated that the aforementioned drug may be prescribed and dispensed only in the following reimbursable indications: Parkinson’s disease and syndrome and tardive dyskinesia in adults – treatment.
A spokesman for the ministry, when asked about the justification of these actions, explained that it was about limiting the availability of amantadine beyond medical indications for its use. – We want to fully protect the product for patients with indications, i.e. Parkinson’s disease and tardive dyskinesia in adults. Unfortunately, recently too much of this product has been sold beyond medical indications, he added.

With the need to treat COVID-19 and the lack of drugs with known efficacy, doctors and scientists have been trying to use existing drugs for other diseases since the start of the pandemic, amantadine is one candidate.
In recent days, the Ministry of Health informed that clinical trials on amantadine are currently conducted in Poland by two entities – the Independent Public Clinical Hospital No. 4 in Lublin and the Górnośląskie Centrum Medyczne im. prof. Leszek Giec in Katowice.
– At the moment, studies do not confirm the effectiveness of the drug. At the same time, it will be possible to present the preliminary results after reaching a statistically significant number of recruited and examined patients – said Wojciech Andrusiewicz on December 6.
