The menstrual cycle of an asthmatic woman affects the severity of respiratory symptoms, reports the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
The team of Dr. Ferencs Macsali from the University Hospital in Bergen (Norway) watched almost 4. women. All menstruated regularly with cycles of 28 days or less. They were not taking hormonal contraceptives. 28,5 percent respondents smoked, and 8 percent. diagnosed with asthma.
They found that wheezing was more intense between days 10 and 22 of the cycle, with a slight decrease in ovulation, and dyspnea – greatest between days 7 and 21 of the cycle – also with a slight decrease around ovulation. Moreover, respiratory symptoms were not unique to women diagnosed with asthma. Post-ovulation coughs increased in both asthmatics, smokers and overweight women.
When a woman has a period, complex hormonal processes in the course of the cycle determine when a woman has a period. Some hormones rise, others fall. During ovulation, the body temperature rises. Such phenomena can directly affect the condition of the respiratory tract, and indirectly – the inflammatory reaction associated with an infection.
According to specialists, thanks to this discovery it will be possible to better adjust the treatment to the needs of patients – that is, more effective treatment at lower costs. (PAP)
