History of the origin of the name Yaroslav

There are two versions of the origin of the name Yaroslav. Firstly, it allegedly came to the Slavs from the Norman language. Secondly, and more likely, the name Yaroslav has pagan roots. During the times of the ancient Slavs, it was associated with the god of fertility Yarilo. However, after the baptism of Rus’, the name Yaroslav was one of the first to be included in the Orthodox calendar, because its bearers became worthy Christians. Then the meaning of this word changed: the pagan roots were forgotten, the name began to be associated with the epithet “hot”. It was considered a “princely name”: until the 13th century, many princes of the Slavic lands were so named. Its most famous owners in Ancient Rus’ are Yaroslav the Wise, who is trying to eradicate paganism and is famous for his wisdom, and Prince Yaroslav Svyatoslavovich of Murom, who baptized Murom. Note that it was not customary to name the children of ordinary people after princes, so the name Yaroslav became common among the people only after 1917.
