History of the origin of the name Tikhon

Tikhon is a name of Greek origin and goes back to the nomination of the ancient Greek goddess of fate and chance, Fortuna or Tyche. It has nothing in common with the Slavic word “quiet”, but is translated as “fate, chance, lot.” Therefore, it is believed that the owner of this name will always be successful in any business, because the goddess herself accompanies him.

The name came to us along with Orthodoxy from Byzantium, where the saint and wonderworker Tikhon of Amafunt, who lived in the 5th century and actively fought against paganism in Cyprus, was revered, destroying idol temples.

In Russia, the name Tikhon was not common among nobles, but since the end of the 19th century it has been more often used by monks. In the first quarter of the 20th century, the term “Tikhonism” even appeared, associated with the name of Patriarch Tikhon, who anathematized Soviet power and was sharply opposed to revolutionary ideology and the renewal of the church.

The meaning and characteristics of the name Tikhon

As a child, Tikhon is usually calm and not capricious. He attracts people well, especially his peers. Tikhon does not require much attention from his parents, since he is self-sufficient and can entertain himself. He loves to read, preferring books about travel and adventure, often fantastic. Rich imagination, erudition and the ability to tell stories are the main ways that help Tikhon make friends. But you shouldn’t think that a boy with this name is quiet: in a company he often leads, captivating his friends with active games or competitions, although in the future sports most likely will not become a priority activity for him.

The adult Tikhon is still independent, thorough and friendly. He carefully considers each of his decisions, without succumbing to emotions, due to which he quickly achieves what he wants.
