History of the origin of the name Tamerlan

The name Tamerlane became widely used in the countries of Central Asia thanks to the incredible popularity of the ruler and military leader Timur ibn Taragai Barlas, who lived in the 14th century.

Timur is translated from Turkic as “iron”; this name is given to the son in the hope that he will be courageous, persistent and strong. In many Persian chronicles, the successful conqueror is condescendingly called “Timur Liang,” which translates as “Timur the Lame” and alludes to the physical disability of the commander, who was severely limping. Most likely, it was an offensive nickname, but over time it became a proper name, losing its derogatory meaning.

Timur’s second nickname was “sahibkiran,” which meant “born under two planets” or “lucky.”

By naming a child this way, parents wish him a great future, power over the world and the hearts of people, financial well-being and luck. In addition, the name Tamerlan should provide the child with iron health and perseverance.
