The name Simon is a modern version of the name Simon, common in Germanic and Romance languages: English, German, French, Spanish, etc.
There are two most convincing versions of the origin of the name Simon. According to the Aramaic version, the name is translated as “son of Jonah.”
The second hypothesis traces the name Simon to the ancient Greek language, from where it was borrowed into Hebrew – Shimon (שִׁמְעוֹן). There are several characters named Simon in the Old Testament. The most famous Simon is the son of Jacob and his unloved first wife Leah. According to legend, after giving birth to Simon, Leah said: “The Lord heard that I was unloved, and gave me a son as a consolation.” Therefore, the meaning of the name Simon is interpreted as “the Lord heard,” “the consolation of the Lord.” In the New Testament, this name belongs to two apostles: Simon the son of Jonah (which echoes the Aramaic version), who later received the name Peter and Simon the Zealot.
Currently, the name Simon is widespread in Western Europe and the USA, as well as in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In Russia it exists in several national versions: Semyon, Simon, Simeon.
