Origin of the name Samuel
The name Samuel (שְׁמוּאֵל) is of Hebrew origin. Before the phonetic transformation it sounded like Shemuel (Shmuel). According to scholars, Samuel is translated as “the name of God,” “God heard,” “heard by God.”
Samuel is one of the most important names in the Old Testament. According to the Bible, Samuel was a prophet and the last judge of Israel. He lived in difficult times when the Israelites, punished for their sins, lost the battle with the Philistines and lost the Ark of the Covenant.
