Origin of the name Rome

The name Rome has two common origins.

The first option raises the name to the name of the capital of Italy – Rome. The origin of this name, as well as the proper name derived from it, is not known for certain. The Roman scientist Servius Honoratus suggested that the name of the city corresponds to the ancient name of the Tiber River – Rumon, which translates as “flow” or “city on the river”. Greek historians, in turn, argued that the name is of Greek origin. According to legend, this was the name of the granddaughter of the Trojan hero Aeneas, thanks to whom the Trojans stopped wandering and settled on the banks of the Tiber. It was she who married the local king Latinus and became the mother of Romulus and Remus, who founded Rome. The Etruscan version traces the name of the city to the word “rumis” – “breast”, “stern”. This goes well with the emblem of Rome – the she-wolf who suckled the brothers Romulus and Remus.
