Origin of the name Rifat
The roots of the name Rifat should be sought in the Proto-Indo-European language that existed in the territory of modern Europe, North Africa, Asia, India and Pakistan. It can be found among both Arabs and Jews. The name Rifat is translated as “highly standing”, “endowed with power”, “chosen to rule”.
The name Rifat is mentioned in the Old Testament. Noah had three sons: Ham, Shem and Japheth. Japheth, in turn, had seven sons. The father of Riphat and his brothers Togarmah and Askenaz was Japheth’s eldest son Gomer. After the flood, Noah’s children populated the earth. The descendants of Shem gave rise to the Shemitic peoples; the descendants of Ham occupied Canaan and Africa; Japheth’s descendants settled in Europe and Asia Minor.
Askenaz became the ancestor of the Scandinavian tribes, Togarma – the Armenians, and Rifat is considered the forefather of the French, Celts and Scots. Despite this, the name Rifat is practically never found among Jews, and especially not in France and Britain. It can be found in Armenia and peoples professing Islam. The name Rifat is not common in Russia.
