Origin of the name Patimat
The name Patimat is believed to be a variant of the Muslim name Fatima. Translated from Arabic, it means “torn from the mother’s breast” or “adult”. It also has Iranian roots; translated from Farsi it means “fair-faced”.
The name Patimat is widespread among Muslims. According to the Holy Scriptures, Patimat is the fourth daughter of the Prophet Muhammad. Her mother is the first wife of the prophet Khadija. Her father gave her as a wife to his cousin Ali, from whom Patimat gave birth to two sons: Hassan and Hussein. Muhammad loved his daughter and grandchildren very much. One day, introducing his grandchildren to guests, he covered them with a cloak and said: “This is my family.” Since then, Ali’s family received a special status; they began to call it “alkh kisa” – “family of the cloak”.
Patimat was a sympathetic, kind and merciful woman, she helped the poor, revered her father and Allah. When Ali decided to take a second wife, she did not contradict him, although Muhammad was against it and insisted on a divorce.
Muslims, especially Shiites, revere Patimat in much the same way as Christians revere the Virgin Mary. She is considered a healer and miracle worker. This name is widespread in Chechnya and Dagestan.
