Origin of the name Osman

The name Osman is a dialectal variant of the Old Arabic Uthman. It has pre-Islamic origins and is translated as “bone setter.”

One of the first Muslim ascetics, Caliph Uthman ibn Affan, son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, bore this name. This is what determined its wide distribution among those professing Islam. After all, names associated with faith, religion, Allah were considered very worthy.

In Russia, the name Osman became known during the period of the Tatar-Mongol conquest. Nowadays, children are called this name by those who profess Islam.
