History of the origin of the name Neil

The name Neil has several interpretations.

Traditionally, it is traced back to the ancient Greek Νείλος, the origin of which is shrouded in mystery. In Greek mythology, Nile is the son of the titan Ocean and the nymph Tethys. He was the god of the Nile River, the ancestor of such legendary heroes as Danaus and Europa.

The Orthodox Church, the heir to the Byzantine rite, in which much was borrowed from the Greeks, especially with regard to names, knows several figures named Neil. The most revered of them is Nil Stolbensky. The Monk Nil became a monk in his youth, and spent 27 years in solitude in the middle of Lake Seligir on Stolbensky Island.

The second version traces the name Nile to the Indian “Nīla” – “muddy”, “black”, “dark”.

A third version claims that the name Nile is of Celtic origin. It comes from the Gaelic word “neall” or “nél”, which means “cloud”. Variants of the name Neil in European languages: Niall, Nill, Neil, Nigel, Nyadl, Nyal.

In Russia, the name Nil was widespread until the Civil War. Then it gave way to more modern names, and now it has again begun to be found among connoisseurs of ancient names.

As a child, Neil is an energetic and active child. He loves pranks, fortunately harmless ones. Neil is in good health, but sometimes he is lazy and can cleverly deceive his parents by pretending to be sick. Neil is a good student at school and enjoys math and physical education. This is a woman with a kind, flexible disposition, often inconspicuous to other men. But she will live a long and happy life with Neil. Neil is the perfect family man. It creates a cozy, friendly and harmonious atmosphere in the house. He becomes that “stone wall” for his wife, and a reliable friend and ally for his children.
