History of the origin of the name Kurban

The name Kurban comes from the Arabic word qurban (قربان) – “sacrifice”. It is associated with the holiday of sacrifice, Kurban Ait. This holiday is celebrated after the end of the Hajj, on the seventieth day after the holiday of Eid al-Adha, in memory of the sacrifice of the prophet Ibrahim on the tenth day of the month of Dhul-Hijjah.

The Arab legend about the prophet Ibrahim echoes the biblical story about Abraham. Archangel Gabriel appeared to the prophet in a dream and conveyed the will of Allah: to sacrifice his beloved and only son Ismail. Ibrahim went to the valley where Mecca was later built and prepared everything for the ritual. Ismail did not resist, as he deeply revered his father and Allah. But this was only a test of the prophet’s loyalty. At the moment of the sacrifice, Ibrahim’s knife became dull, and the archangel placed a ram on the altar. After this, the prophet was granted the title of “Friend of Allah.” The holiday is celebrated in honor of the mercy of Allah and the obedience of people faithful to him.

The name Qurban is widespread in Arab countries, India and Pakistan. In Russia it is rare.
