Origin of the name Ignat
This beautiful old name is a contraction of the name Ignatius (or Ignatius), which came to modern languages from Latin. Like many words in this language, it is of Etruscan origin and is translated as “fiery” (the Latin root “ignis” translates as “fire”).
The form Egnatius is found among the surnames of several Roman families, and could also be passed on to their freedmen, so it was quite common.
Perhaps this name goes back to a Greek root with a similar sound but a different meaning – “mysterious”, “unknown”, “not yet appeared”.
This was the name of several Catholic and Orthodox saints. Ignat is mentioned in the calendars of both religions, therefore it was used both in Western Europe (in various modifications) and in Russia.
There is also a female version of the name – Ignatia. For many years the name was considered rare, but in the last fifteen years it has become popular again.
