History of the origin of the name Gaidar
There are several versions of the origin of the name Gaidar. Supporters of the Turkic version claim that the name Gaidar means “piper”, “one who walks in front”, “a horseman galloping in front”. This interpretation is due to the fact that musicians always rode ahead of the Tatar cavalry, called upon to raise the morale of the army. Gradually, the meaning of “piper” was erased, and the interpretation of “the horseman galloping in front” gained popularity.
Another version connects the name Gaidar with the Muslim name Haidar, common in the Middle East, which means “lion.” This nickname was borne by Caliph Ali, an ascetic revered by the Shiites. Thus, the name Gaidar is synonymous with the names Aslan and Assad.
The third version connects the name Gaidar not with Eastern, but with Slavic languages. The Serbo-Croatian “gajde, gajdy” (bagpipe) refers to the occupation of the people who played it, sheep herders.
The name Gaidar became widespread in Azerbaijan, as well as in countries whose population is Muslim. In Russia, the name Gaidar has been known for a long time; a very common and well-known Russian surname comes from it.
