Origin of the name Firuza
The name Firuza is of Persian origin, as turquoise is called in Farsi – a beautiful semi-precious stone of a blue or slightly greenish hue. In Persian “firuze” means “stone of happiness”, sometimes this name is traced to another root – “piruz”, which is translated as “winner”. In Iran, where the best turquoise in the world has traditionally been mined for many millennia, this stone was considered a symbol of love. As a sign of their loyalty to each other, lovers exchanged rings decorated with this stone. It was believed that if the turquoise on such a ring darkened, then the feeling weakened or misfortune happened to the owner of the ring. Turquoise was considered the best amulet for a rider setting off on the road, so by calling their daughter Firuza, the parents simultaneously protected the whole family from misfortunes and troubles.
By giving their daughter such a name, the parents hoped that she would be beautiful and kind, that the girl would bring happiness to her husband and parents.
