Origin of the name Damir

The name Damira has three versions of origin.

According to one hypothesis, the name Damir has Slavic roots. This is a shortened form of the ancient Slavic name Darimira or Dalimira. The first part of the name goes back to the verbs “to give” and “to give”, the second to the nouns “world”, “universe”. Thus, the name Damira can be interpreted as “giver of peace,” “founder of the universe.” This is a very rare name, which was given to girls from families of priests.

The second version is put forward by Academician M. Zakiev. He believes that the name Damira is a female version of the male name Damir. And Damir, in turn, is a variant of the name Timur. In the Tatar language, the name Damira means “iron”, “strong”.

The third version refers to the times of active name formation in the Soviet period. When not only new names appeared that carried an ideological orientation, but also additional meanings were infused into the old names. So, Damir can be deciphered as “Give a world revolution!” or “Long live the world!”

The name Damira is popular among the Tatars. It is not widespread in Russia.
