History of the origin of the name Bagrat
There are several versions of the origin of the name Bagrat.
The first hypothesis states that the name Bagrat (Bagadāta) originated in the Persian language, and is translated from the ancient Sabaean dialect as “given by God,” “gift of the gods.”
According to the second version, the name Bagrat (Բագրատ) is of Armenian origin, and is translated as “joy of love.”
The third version illustrates the desire of some scientists to find ancient Slavic roots in everything. They believe that the name Bagrat is a complex name consisting of two abbreviated words “rich” and “warrior”.
And yet the eastern origin of this beautiful and rare name seems most likely. If we look at history, many kings of Abkhazia and Georgia were named after Bagrat. From him the great dynasty of Georgian princes Bagration got its name. The most famous representative of which is Prince Pyotr Ivanovich Bagration, general, hero of the War of 1812.
Currently, the name Bagrat is very rare even among the peoples of the Caucasus. It has no analogues or variants in the form of modern names.
The meaning and characteristics of the name Bagrat
