Origin of the name Ara

The name Ara has several versions of origin.

The most convincing is the Armenian version, where Ara (Արա) is the name of the pagan Armenian god of spring and fertility. It may have come from the Persian Ahura Mazda.

Ara the Beautiful was an Armenian king who lived in the 9th century BC. e. Historians are not entirely sure whether he is a real historical figure or just a figment of popular imagination. However, a number of sources claim that Ara (Aram) the Beautiful is a real person. It is believed that this king united Armenia and was the first to receive the title “king of kings.”

According to legend, stories about the beauty of Ara conquered Semiramis, and she wished to become his wife. But Ara refused the queen, after which she started a bloody war. In one of the battles, Ara was mortally wounded and died in the arms of Semiramis. The place where this event took place is called Arai-gyugh – the village of Ara.

In Italian “ara” means “altar”. From Latin “ara” is translated as “cliff”, “rock”. The name Ara can be either masculine or feminine.

Currently, the name Ara is widespread in Armenia. In Russia it is rare.

The meaning and characteristics of the name Ara
