Origin of the name Akaki

The name Akaki comes from the Greek root κακός, which is translated into Russian as “evil”. The particle “ἀ” in ancient Greek meant negation, so the most accurate translation of the Greek name Ἀκακιος would be “kindly, meek.” However, such a name did not mean that the parents had chosen a peaceful profession for their son; they could also call the future warrior this way, meaning by meekness good morals and an easy, accommodating character.

The Greeks loved to give this sonorous name to boys, and later it spread to Rome. Due to the large number of saints who bore the name “Acacius”, it is often found in Catholic and Orthodox calendars, which also influenced its prevalence in the world.

In the Soviet Union, most Akakis came from Georgia and Armenia, where the name is still very popular. In Portuguese, the Acacio form is more commonly used.

The meaning and characteristics of the name Akaki

Gogol’s immortal “Overcoat” glorified the name Akaki and practically put it out of use in Russia. It is generally accepted that this name can be worn by a weak-willed and devoid of individuality person, but this is not at all true. Akakis are distinguished by their original mind and unconventional approach to problem solving; they are ambitious and stubborn. Don’t be fooled by Akaki’s reserved and cold behavior; he simply knows how to hide the boiling passions behind a polite facial expression and correct phrases.

In their work they have no equal, but only if Akaki does what he loves. If he likes the work, then he gives his all, is ready to work for a modest pay and in difficult conditions. If he doesn’t like the work, then despite all the efforts of the conscientious Akaki, the result will be far from brilliant.

Akaki loves entertainment, friendly parties and colorful holidays. Ordinary frugality betrays him when it comes to pleasure. At friendly gatherings, he relaxes, talks a lot, and loves to dance.
