The purpose of life and the meaning of life are two different things. The purpose of life gives it a core, integrity and direction. The meaning of life says that what you do is really necessary for someone.

One can speak about the meaning of life when the individual life of a person has integrity and an inner core. A life that is not organized by purpose has no meaning in itself.

If a person lived all his life thoughtlessly, without a rudder and sails, each time doing random things — he lived the time of his life, but he did not live his life: he was ruled by circumstances and other people. Is it possible to talk about the purpose and meaning of such a life? — Apparently not.

If a person’s life is organized by some goals, has a certain direction and certain results, then such a life has a goal and a meaning is possible. However, it is only possible. Life can have a purpose but no meaning.

If a schizophrenic collector spent his whole life purposefully collecting torn candy wrappers, his life had a direction and purpose, but it is difficult to call it meaningful. Who needs his wrappers?

Or, the purpose of life is a dissertation. He defended himself, got a crust on his hands — so what? If you understand that no one (neither you nor people) seriously needs your dissertation, then the years spent on it may seem meaningless. And for what to live on — it is also unclear.

The meaning of life, in contrast to the purpose of life, is the vision (understanding) that what you did is seriously needed by someone. At least you need it. The purpose of life is more often characterized by energetic people, but life energy in itself does not guarantee that you will find yourself in life where you want. You can move vigorously to the top, and then find that this peak is not yours. How not to make a mistake? Think ahead. You often look at your life from its end, asking yourself: when I am 60 (80, name the number yourself) years old, how will I look at my life? What did I give myself in this life, what did I leave to others?
