What happened to the body of a 42-year-old man with lymphoma from Saudi Arabia surprised even doctors. The man’s fingernails suddenly turned dark brown with light stripes. What was the cause of these remarkable changes?
The history of the Saudi was described by scientists from the King Saud University – Dr. Musa Alzahrani and Mohammed AlJasser. The patient was treated for Hodgkin’s lymphoma (this is a cancer of the lymphatic system, also known as Hodgkin’s lymphoma). The patient was receiving chemotherapy. And it was after her administration that the man’s nails began to change.
The examination of the 42-year-old showed a dark brown discoloration of the nails (the so-called melanonychia) and two types of transverse white lines, imperceptible by touch (the so-called Mees lines – longer arrow and Muehrcke lines – shorter arrow). These changes resulted from damage to the nail matrix and its abnormal vascularization. After detailed analysis, it turned out that the drugs used to treat lymphoma disturbed the blood flow in the blood vessels of the nails.
The man has now finished treatment. After he stopped taking his medications, his nail color returned to normal.
