While most of those imprisoned dream of returning home, some believe that the house is the real prison. Such thoughts, for example, visited the hero of this story. It seemed to him that it was easier to surrender to the police again than to live next to his wife.
A 30-year-old Albanian living in Italy was sentenced to several years of house arrest for drug dealing. It would seem that such a verdict should be rejoiced – despite the crime committed, the man was left in his usual surroundings, not separated from his wife and other relatives.
However, the Albanian thought otherwise. In less than a couple of months, he ran away from home and turned himself in to the police. According to the captain of the Carabinieri (military personnel in Italy) Francesco Giacomo Ferrante, the man said: “Listen, my home life has turned into hell. I can’t take it anymore, I want to go to jail.”
His wish was immediately granted. But not because the law enforcement officers were imbued with sympathy – just the prisoner, having left the house, violated the conditions of house arrest.
Living with relatives isn’t the only reason people are willing to go to jail
For example, a resident of the Chinese city of Kunshan in Jiangsu province felt that sitting behind bars is better than helping his daughter do her math homework. The man lay down on the roadway and did not move until passers-by called the police.
When the law enforcement officers arrived, the Chinese man admitted that he did so because of the helplessness he felt. According to him, for several days he and his daughter have been solving simple math problems. “And in the end, my daughter subtracted 700 from 800. She said that the result is 900,” the man explained to the policeman.
After his story, he asked to be arrested and taken to prison. The officer helped him up, took him to the sidewalk, and nevertheless persuaded him to go home.
Meanwhile, in the Austrian city of Salzburg, a fugitive prisoner, who had been hiding in the Canary Islands for a long time, surrendered to the police.
A 64-year-old man with two suitcases himself approached law enforcement officers at the railway station and said that he escaped from prison more than ten years ago. All these years he lived on the island of Tenerife.
As the Austrian explained, he decided to give up because he was tired of life at the resort. He noted that now Tenerife is no longer the same as before, and added that the time that he had already managed to spend there would be enough.
The audit confirmed that before the escape, the man was serving a sentence in a prison in eastern Austria. The escaped prisoner was again taken into custody.
