The main fragrances of the decade: how they are remembered

Every year, the perfume market releases at least a hundred new fragrances. Many of them go unnoticed. But some are in our hearts and perfume cabinets for years to come, and we remember them even today.

2009: Feminite du Bois, Serge Lutens

The fragrance is notable for the fact that it uses typically masculine ingredients for the first time. At the same time, the fragrance was created for a female audience. The name “Femininity of the Forest” reveals the main idea of the perfumer – femininity born of natural strength. For the first time in the fragrance, a strong concentration of cedar tree absolute is used. The idea of femininity is conveyed by creamy, honey, fruity and floral notes.

2010: Aventus, Creed

The fragrance is still considered the brand’s bestseller. And it is notable not only for its mega-fruit on a woody base, appetizing and creating a sweet sillage. The scent is based on the concept – to create a scent from ingredients that are somehow connected with the name of Napoleon, and thus dedicate the scent to him. From Corsica, the birthplace of the conqueror, black currants were brought, from South America – pineapples, any delicacy of Bonaparte, from France – fragrant apples, the throne of Napoleon was carved from birch. The fragrance was launched for men, but due to the abundance of fruit in the composition and the long sillage, it became popular with many women.

2011: The In Love Again Collection, Yves Saint Laurent

The fragrance is part of the YSL La Collection and is famous for the most accurate transfer of the aroma of black currant berries and leaves. The fragrance develops the theme of fresh and cool fruitiness, conveying the feeling of spring and clean air filled with love. Black currants are framed here with grapes, blackberries, mandarin and light floral notes.

2012: Philosykos Eau de Parfum, Diptyque

When people talk about figs in perfumery, the first thing every perfume lover remembers is this particular scent. It was created to convey a warm sunny afternoon on the picturesque Adriatic coast. However, in our memory it is associated primarily with the fig tree. All its parts are here: ripe fruit, fruits pounded between the fingers, green leaves, resin and juice. Translated from Greek, the word “Philosikos” literally means “lover of the fig tree.”

2014: Fleur Narcotique from nothing

The “narcotic flower” has gained incredible popularity due to its bright and at the same time balanced combination of lychee, peony and peach, and a long train that collects a lot of compliments. This popularity has led to it becoming one of the most frequently counterfeited fragrances. The counterfeits, unlike the original, have sweeter notes and lack the very attractive fruity-floral balance.

2015: El Cosmico, DS & Durga

The scent is an attempt to recreate the smell of “another space” and make us think about the eternal. It conveys the mystical atmosphere of the desolate place of Marfa, which is called the cosmic axis of West Texas. It is an atypical scent made from local natural raw materials, together with one of the local shamans, who consider Marfa a place of power. Dry sand, cold rails, creosote, mystical plants and trees. The fragrance was never accepted by lovers of sweet flower compotes, but it received recognition from lovers of unusual conceptual perfumery.

2016: Angel Star of Dreams Night Water, Thierry Mugler

“Scent for the night time” is remembered by us as the very first pajama scent, which is recommended to be applied at the end of the day and to go in it to embrace Morpheus. The large amount of white musk used as the main ingredient in the fragrance creates the feeling of silk linen and cashmere blanket. Other ingredients in the fragrance are light citrus notes, warm spices and delicate vanilla. The scent helps to relax after a hard day and fall asleep.

2017: Concrete, Comme des Garcons

I remember it as a contrast of form and content – a concrete bottle and a sandalwood scent. The perfume is dedicated to the stone jungle of a big city, where, despite the hard and automated rhythm, live people live with their feelings, emotions, who know how to love and compassion. The concept of the brand was to present a mild aroma in the most rigid, “concrete” bottle. It is a scent of sandalwood surrounded by jasmine, cumin and cardamom.

2018: Nọ 4 – After Love, Thomas Kosmala

The name of the fragrance “After Love” evokes romantic thoughts. The concept of the scent is the same. This is an attempt to convey how a woman’s skin and space can smell after a night of love. There are no expected floral and sweet notes here. Everything is quite naturalistic and harmonious – bitter orange leaf, dry woody notes, a little musk and amber.

2019: Infinite Definitive, LM Parfums

“Endless perfection” will be remembered as an olfactory journey into the forest space. The creators of the brand invite us to interact with nature and feel all its facets – from the early awakening of the morning forest, full of dew and coolness, to a warm afternoon in a flower meadow. The composition of the aroma is simple and harmonious: bitter green galbanum, black currant leaves, gardenia, juniper berries.
