The main causes of dehydrated skin

It is important to understand the difference between dehydration and dry skin. Then it is easier to choose the necessary means for proper care and prevention of problems.

How to tell dehydrated skin from dry skin

In this article, we will talk about the reasons that cause a lack of moisture in the skin. Dry and dehydrated skin are not the same thing.

Understanding the difference is important in order to find the right solution to the problem, not to make it worse.

  • Even oily skin can be dehydrated. But outwardly, this will not be manifested by dryness, but, on the contrary, by increased production of sebum and a pronounced oily sheen.

  • If dehydrated skin is of the normal or dry type, then it actually becomes drier in appearance and feel. And it often peels off.

Sudden hypersensitivity of the skin may be an indirect sign of its dehydration.

Whether your skin is experiencing a moisture deficiency, you can find out with our test.

If nothing is done, dehydration will progress, peeling, premature age-related changes will appear. Without moisture, metabolic processes are disrupted, the skin loses its ability to work effectively, to fully produce collagen and elastin. In addition, protective functions are reduced, the epidermis becomes vulnerable to external aggressive factors.

This is what the dehydration test described by our expert looks like.

The main causes of moisture deficiency

Heat and exercise

When we sweat, we lose moisture. And along with it – sodium and potassium ions, which, in particular, are part of the natural moisturizing factor of the skin. Therefore, after a hot day, as well as after a session in the sauna / bath or after intense physical exertion, moisturizing care is required.

Abuse of sun exposure

As a protective reaction to ultraviolet light, the outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, thickens. If this happens abruptly, then the skin cells do not have time to fully mature and form the necessary connections. As a result, microcracks form through which moisture evaporates.

Dry air

From this point of view, both heat and frost are equally harmful. After all, the skin is naturally moisturized not only from the inside, but also from the outside. When there is not enough moisture in the air, there is also a deficiency in the skin.

Air conditioning and/or central heating

These benefits of civilization greatly dry the air in the rooms where we spend most of our time. This is very bad for the skin.

Too hot and/or too hard tap water

To preserve the beauty and health of the skin, cool soft water is optimal. So, when contrast douches or showers are recommended to you, the word “contrasting” should not be taken literally: a temperature difference of 10-15 ° C is useful.

Soap and skin care

Not only soap can dry out the skin, but also a regular washing gel designed for a different type of skin. Do not clean dry skin with products intended for oily, and vice versa. By the way, among the shower gels, it is also better to choose those that contain moisturizing ingredients and oils.

Chlorinated pool water

Moisturizing cream for face and body must be in the bag with which you go to the pool.

Aircraft

At an altitude of 10 m, the humidity on board an aircraft is far from optimal for skin. Therefore, on the eve of the flight and after it, make moisturizing masks. And take a mini-spray with thermal water on board. Apply it properly: spray it on your face and pat it dry with a tissue, otherwise the dryness will get worse.

Sea water

On the one hand, it is a storehouse of useful substances. However, after swimming in the sea, it is necessary to take a shower to wash off the salt – it draws moisture from the skin.

Neglect of moisturizing cosmetics

Even at a young age and regardless of specific skin problems, we must not forget about moisturizing. After all, the functionality of this organ depends on the level of moisture.

Insufficient water intake

The recommendation to drink 2 liters of water a day can be considered an average. In fact, everyone has their own norm, at the rate of 30 ml per 1 kg of weight. So a miniature girl and one and a half liters can be a lot. But if there is not enough fluid in the body, then it will not be enough in the skin.

Excess salt in the diet

Yes, salt attracts water, causing swelling. You probably had the opportunity to see this the next morning after a late dinner with an abundance of salty dishes.

Smoking, alcohol

Both of these lead to toxicity. The body, trying to get rid of toxins, by all means reduces their concentration, and for this “mobilizes” water from everywhere, including from the skin.

Hormonal changes

First of all, we are talking about lowering the level of female sex hormones. After all, they are responsible in many respects not only for an attractive look, but also for moisturizing the mucous membranes and skin.
