In a hospital in Szczecin, the liver of a 20-year-old poisoned after eating a toadstool was told PAP, the director of the provincial hospital at ul. Arkońska, Dr. Mariusz Pietrzak.
20-year-old Wiktor, a resident of the voivodeship Pomeranian, with symptoms of poisoning after eating mushrooms, on Thursday he was taken to a hospital in Bydgoszcz, then to a hospital in Gdańsk. On Sunday, due to the patient’s serious condition, he was transported to Szczecin.
The patient came to us conscious, with symptoms of hepatic failure beginning. His condition deteriorated rapidly, the liver ceased to perform its cleansing functions, said Dr. Pietrzak.
The patient was in intensive care while waiting for the organ to be transplanted. The transplant was performed on a Tuesday to Wednesday night. The patient is kept in a pharmacological coma, from which he will be gradually awakened within a few days.
Vital parameters are stable – said Dr. Pietrzak. Everything indicates that there are no reasons that something bad will happen – he added.
Szczecin is the fourth city, next to Warsaw, Katowice and Wrocław, where liver transplants are performed. Last year, at the hospital at ul. Arkońska has undergone 55 such transplants, including over 30. Since 2001, when the hospital started such operations, more than 250 livers have been transplanted. Over 90% of our patients enjoy good health after such surgery – said Pietrzak. (PAP)
