Let’s figure out what to look for when buying and how the presence of a removable cover can affect the choice.
Life in the age of progress and technology is getting faster and faster. And yet one thing remains unchanged: a person spends a third of his life in a dream. A lot depends on how well the place for sleeping is organized: from a positive mood to well-being and even a successful day at work.
And here literally everything matters: the high-quality assembly of the bed, and the base, and, of course, the mattress. Even the classics of Russian literature Ilf and Petrov sang the “mattress” in “The Twelve Chairs”. They devoted almost an ode to this subject: “This is a family hearth, the alpha and omega of furnishings, the general and whole of home comfort, a love base, the father of a primus.”
However, in those years, future “mattress owners” did not have a choice as such: there was only one option available – a spring one. But now the assortment of mattresses is so great that the eyes literally run up: spring and springless, combined, orthopedic, semi-rigid, hard, soft. An orthopedic mattress helps to maintain the spine in the correct position, regardless of what position you sleep in.
So, what should you pay attention to when choosing a mattress.
Size
There are a number of standard sizes available.
Single (80 × 190 cm, 80 × 200 cm, 90 × 200 cm);
One-and-a-half (120 × 200 cm);
Double (140 × 200 cm, 160 × 200 cm, 180 × 200, 200 × 200 cm).
Round products are most often double, with a diameter of 190, 200, 210 or 220 cm.
The exact size of the mattress matches the size of the inner perimeter of the bed. It must be measured with a tape measure. The size of the old mattress should not be taken into account. Indeed, during operation, it could be deformed, which means that the data in this case will be inaccurate.
Have you measured the sleeping place? Now you can check the received data with the standard dimensions. If they coincide or differ by 1 cm, you can safely order a standard size mattress. But the difference of 2 cm or more is already a reason to order a mattress from the manufacturer according to its size. Remember that the mattress should fit snugly into the perimeter of the bed.
Age
The younger a person is, the harder he needs a sleeping surface. The older, the softer.
· Newborns and children under 3 years of age are advised by orthopedic surgeons to sleep on hard surfaces. This is necessary for the correct formation of the spine. The ideal option is a springless mattress with a hard surface – under pressure and load, cartilage forms faster and better in the bone.
· For a child 3-10 years old, pick up a moderately rigid springless model. Experts recommend combining coconut with softer fillers such as latex foam, holofiber or polyurethane foam.
· For persons from 10 to 25 years old, all springless mattresses are suitable for individual choice (except latex) or based on a block of independent springs with coconut from 1 to 2 cm to choose from.
· In the period from 25 to 50 years, you can choose any mattress, based on your own preferences. If there is any pain or disease in the spine and neck, the firmness of the mattress plays an important role. In case of frequent pain and discomfort in the spine and neck, from the options suitable for weight and age, you should choose the hardest mattress.
After 50 years, it is advisable to soften the sleeping place as much as possible in order to minimize the counter pressure on the joints and not disturb the blood flow. Latex, latex foam, memory foam or polyurethane foam are suitable.
The firmness of the mattress determines the filling, which is located at the top and bottom of the spring block. For example, 1 cm of coconut will create a medium-hard surface, and already 2 cm of coconut coir will make the mattress hard, while latex will soften the surface, make it more dense and comfortable.
Physical activity level
The higher a person’s physical activity, the softer he needs a bed for proper muscle recovery during sleep.
Human weight
Under a person with a large weight, the soft mattress will bend in the middle. As a result, the sleeper’s spine will be in a curved position. At the same time, if a person with a low weight (up to 60 kg) sleeps on a very hard mattress, the mattress will not bend at all, and the spine will again be in the wrong position.
Weight is proportional to the stiffness of the sleeping surface:
* Up to 60 kg – soft and moderately soft;
* 60-90 kg – medium;
* 90+ kg – moderate and high.
The big difference in the weight of a sleeping couple is no longer a problem. In this case, you can order two mattresses of different filling for a double bed. Make sure that the models are of the same height.

The presence of a viewing zipper or removable cover
It would seem a trifle that does not affect the quality of the product itself. But this is only at first glance. Alas, cases when the latex declared by the manufacturer ended up wrapped in foam rubber, and the height of the coconut coir was only 0,5 cm instead of the required 1-2 cm, are not rare.
The easiest way to protect yourself from buying a low-quality mattress is to buy a model with a viewing zipper. This will ensure that the composition of the mattress matches its specifications. Here are just some manufacturers offer to sew in a viewing zipper for a fee. And this is an additional cost.
