Japanese NHK TV, together with experts in the field of infectious diseases, conducted an interesting experiment showing how we spread germs and viruses indoors. This is a good lesson for today and the future, because this is how not only the coronaviruses responsible for COVID-19 spread, but also influenza viruses and pathogenic bacteria.
How do viruses and bacteria spread?
For several dozen minutes, the studio turned into a typical restaurant with an open buffet, many of which, for example, on cruise ships, hotels, and canteens. Guests put their own food at the so-called Swedish table, and meals are eaten at the tables.
Ten extras participated in the experiment. One person who played the role of the infected rubbed his hands with a special liquid, visible only under ultraviolet light. The fluorescent substance represented the germs that the patient transfers to his hands by covering his mouth when coughing or sneezing.
The extras began to eat, and after 30 minutes in the studio, the lights were turned off and the ultraviolet lamps were turned on. It immediately turned out that the germs had spread throughout the room. They were on everything that the “infected” person touched – on food spreading tongs, dish covers, jugs with beverages – which other guests were handling. It has been found on cutlery, plates, glasses, cups, tablecloths and, of course, on cell phones.
Before half an hour had passed, each of the participants in the experiment had come into contact with the germs, and three people had a fluorescent substance on their faces.
