The harm of smoking: how to quit? Video
The fact that smoking is harmful to health is known to everyone. They shout about this at all corners, and now the obsessive anti-advertising on cigarette packs does not forget to repeat that “smoking is harmful to your health.” Despite this, a number of smokers do not think about it at all. Someone would be happy to quit, but the arguments seem unconvincing. Is smoking really that bad?
In theory, you would like to quit smoking. But something is constantly lacking, and the habit itself does not seem so harmful. At the same time, you know that smoking causes problems with the cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, reproductive systems, problems with sex life and mental disorders. Even with this in mind, quitting smoking is not easy.
To begin with, you should at least think about the fact that smoking is really harmful. To do this, be prepared to ask yourself a few questions.
Awareness as understanding the situation is the first step towards the victory over nicotine addiction, and awareness as control over what is happening is the next, which comes as a consequence.
Did you know that smoking shortens your life? How many people in the world smoke? Why do you smoke? Do you always take a drag on your cigarette to feel the nicotine smoke inside your lungs, or is there a different reason? Do you often smoke for the company or out of habit? Have you tried quitting, and if so, how soon did you start to feel better?
Someone quits, as it seems, easily and quickly, simply by giving up cigarettes. Perhaps these people had an iron will or their dependence was not too great?
To get a deep understanding of the harmful effects of smoking, try doing one of the following:
- Get closer to the problem. Without thinking about something, you never realize whether it is good or bad, harmful or useful. Read about what nicotine smoke does to your body and consider if it’s worth it. Take your research seriously.
- Don’t dismiss the problem, consider it carefully. A simple poster that smoking ruins teeth and causes heart attacks usually does not cause reactions in people, because these facts are so well known to everyone that they are simply ignored.
Take the problem seriously, understand what is hiding behind these words: smoking increases the risk of heart attack 10 times
- This means that a smoker is 10 times more likely to die from a heart attack, which is one of the most common causes of death. Just think about these words.
- Understand the mechanism of action of nicotine on the body. Read or watch a video about how a cigarette affects a person, what exactly happens in the lungs, brain, and blood vessels. Which substances have a calming and relaxing effect and after which it becomes difficult to breathe.
A deep understanding of the effects of a cigarette is an awareness of the dangers of smoking
- That is why most health organizations around the world are fighting against smoking, because there are people who work there who understand the essence of the problem best.
- Start smoking consciously. As soon as you have an impulse to smoke, catch yourself thinking and ask if you really wanted to smoke. Why did this desire come, what influenced him? Now you are lighting a cigarette, but what do you want to get from this cigarette? At the end, ask yourself if it was possible to do without a cigarette this time. If so, would you have to replace it with something? Looking at yourself, you will realize that smoking gives you absolutely nothing. Is it worth anything, even a fraction of the harm that each cigarette does to the body?
If you ask yourself all these questions and understand that smoking is really harmful, but it does not affect your habit and there is no desire to change it, then you can ask yourself the following question: how seriously do you take yourself and your life?
The following can interfere with the awareness of the harm from smoking:
- constant stress
- depression
- complexes
- self-esteem problems
What is the harm of smoking
Smoking causes vasospasm, resulting in impaired blood supply to all organs. For the brain, this means a lack of oxygen, which impairs thinking ability. It also leads to the fact that there are more free fatty acids in the blood, the amount of cholesterol increases, and blood pressure rises. Tobacco tar is deposited on the mucous membranes and epithelium of the lungs, destroying them. The working volume of the lungs decreases, which also deprives the brain of oxygen, which means that it further reduces cognitive abilities.
The negative impact is made on the entire body as a whole, but the consequences are more quickly manifested where human health is weakest. For women, the reproductive system is especially vulnerable, as well as the condition of the hair and skin. Moreover, medical research shows that the children of women who smoke are born less healthy, they are much more at risk of sudden infant mortality.
Secondhand smoke is also very harmful. If you smoke, you damage not only your health, but also harm others, including your family and children.
The tobacco smoke that a smoker inhales consists of thousands of different chemicals, of which several hundred are classified as the strongest poisons. About 40 of them are very strong carcinogens – these are substances that cause cancer through their effects. It is helpful to remember that in developed countries, cancer and heart problems are the most common causes of death. Smoking significantly increases the likelihood of both.
