Portuguese scientists discovered the cause of lupus erythematosus. The disease of reduced immunity is caused by several types of genes.
In the course of five years of research, conducted by experts from the Abel Salazar Institute and the St. Anthony Hospital in Porto, it was possible to determine the main cause of lupus erythematosus. Its genesis has so far been unclear.
“Several types of genes are the main culprit of the disease. The presence of one of them is conducive to the appearance of visceral lupus erythematosus, unless the body also has the so-called protector genes. Their presence protects against rolling, even though the body is predisposed to disease, ‘said Dr. Carlos Vasconcelos from the research team.
Based on the discovery, Porto scientists have already started work on a cure for visceral lupus erythematosus. ‘We put new information together like a puzzle, creating the conditions for an effective solution to this disease,’ added Dr Carlos Vasconcelos.
The discovery of scientists from Porto was noticed in November this year by the Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine and awarded with a check worth 10 thousand. euro.
Visceral lupus erythematosus, also called systemic lupus erythematosus, is an autoimmune disease and belongs to the group of lupus erythematosus diseases. It develops against the background of complex disorders of the immune system, leading to inflammation of many tissues and organs. Women, mainly between the ages of 16 and 55, are ten times more likely to suffer from this disease.
