The gastronomy of Hiroshima, the city of peace

If you have ever enjoyed oriental cuisine, we recommend you visit this city.

Located in Japan, it is located on the Ota River delta dividing the city into six islands, this makes it a city with a clear focus on the sea and the products it offers.

Hiroshima has a very healthy culinary culture, with a lot of sea flavor, and its traditional dishes are different from the rest of the regions of the Japanese country.

The first image that comes to us of the city is not the culinary one, unfortunately in our retina there will always be that fateful ranking of being the first city bombed with nuclear weapons …, but today it can offer us many things that are really surprising!

The typical dishes of Hiroshima

The first thing you should know is that six rivers full of oysters they go through this city and the Japanese have the custom of cooking them grilled. The oysters are cooked without removing the shell and are a real delicacy, just add a little lemon or soy sauce, or also the typical Japanese sauce ponzu. We recommend you try this sauce because it will surprise you, it is prepared with rice vinegar and seaweed.

Another typical dish is Dote-nabe, a casserole in which oysters are mixed with pasta and vegetables such as Chinese cabbage and tofu. The pasta we are talking about is “miso”, this type of fermented pasta is also flavored and produced in different varieties that you can taste in the same pot.

El Okonomiyaki

How delicious it is! it is also known as “Japanese pizza”, but it has nothing to do with the Italian pizza we know.

It is so called because in the recipe a similar dough is prepared that is usually cooked in front of the customer on a griddle, while they are adding all the ingredients that make up the dish.

In some restaurants, diners sit around a table with an iron and can add the ingredients to their liking.

To give you a basic idea we explain how the preparation works.

  • First you have to cook the ingredients, put the dough on the grill with the cabbage on top and add the noodles (the famous noodles), If you want a meat flavor you add bacon and if you prefer a sea flavor you add prawns.
  • Then you have to turn the ingredients and break an egg on top.
  • You also add the desired amount of spring onion and corn, to finally turn everything over again and add the original sauce okonomiyaki.

If you visit those restaurants where the customer is the one who chooses the ingredients for the okonomiyaki, it is normal that you find more variety. You can cook it with cheese, squid, different types of meat and vegetables.

The normal thing is to have more sauce and add it while you eat, and the perfect accompaniment is a beer or some Sake. In total this dish usually costs around a thousand yen, which is almost nine euros.

Don’t be afraid to try new things, discovering new flavors while visiting a different culture can be a lot of fun. We encourage you to visit Hiroshima and try its culinary delights.
